Results-oriented, solutions-focused, and versatile leader with more than 25 years of
experience managing classic golf courses on Poa annua greens from California to New York. A well-rounded, proven industry professional, Steven has worked at some of the best clubs in America. Through his tenure he has transformed Siwanoy Country Club into one of the top-conditioned golf courses in the New York City area. Completing a $6M restoration a decade ago allowed him to create surfaces that are much more efficient to manage. Firm & Fast isn’t just a buzzword at Siwanoy, it’s a constant. He has built a team of individuals that push this property to the brink but never past it from April through November. Being the longest tenured employee at Siwanoy, he is a leader in more than just greens. Siwanoy has become his home due to a membership and course that allows him to manage to the fullest.

FORESIGHT
I see through a problem or project. The solution of a problem or project often creates secondary or collateral problems that need to be understood before starting a new goal or breaking ground on a project.
COMMUNICATION
From Club President to Maintenance worker, my communication is clear, consistent, and geared towards the ears I am speaking to. I hear the concerns and develop strategies to find results in a way all can be proud of with while reaching the end goal.
EFFICIENCY
From crew management to Mother Nature, being an efficient superintendent is required to maintain the world’s best golf course. Deep understanding of course management processes that solve problems both in the short and long term
CONSISTENCY
This is the number one issue most Superintendents face. Notwithstanding weather or major agronomic practices, a course should play the same every day regardless of the tournament schedule. Members and Guests on a Tuesday should get the same playing conditions as those that played in a tournament over the weekend. Balls should be bouncing, not stuck in their pitchmarks.
CULTURE
Both with crew management and membership, I create a culture in golf course management where everybody knows their role, has responsibility and is proud to produce results. I have several employees with 35 years experience at Siwanoy who are as motivated as myself. Several of my past assistants have moved on to become Superintendents at prominent clubs.
NETWORK
While working at five classic clubs around the country, I have formed invaluable relationships with industry icons that have shaped who I am. I continually keep in contact with many whom we bounce stories and thoughts off of. Constantly learning and adapting to maintain Siwanoy as the trendsetter.
CONFIDENCE
There are few obstacles I haven’t dealt with in my career. Managing a set of 100+ year old greens for 17 years in top condition isn’t luck, it’s a mix of intelligence, skill and craft. I have successfully managed through grow-ins, droughts, disease, floods and a labor stricken pandemic. An average superintendent finds excuses while a great superintendent never gets stuck in the first place and steers the course away from the trouble.
FARMING MINDSET
I consider myself a white collar farmer. There is nothing better than connecting with the land to create a golfing experience. It cannot be replicated in any other profession.
