As golf courses mature, things change. In order to keep things fresh and new, construction, renovation, and restoration projects need to be carefully planned for the future success of any club. Over the years I have been involved with many projects. Below are a few of many capital improvements during my turfgrass management career:

Projects

MAJOR COURSE RESTORATION

From 2012-2015, Siwanoy Country Club underwent a major renovation.  As superintendent, I stayed abreast daily of the project. The scope of the project included:

– Phased Project working spring and fall only for three years

– Major permitting at local, state, and federal levels (army corps of engineers)

– Architect Mike DeVries and support labor of Labar Golf Renovations

– Included on average 50% addition to greens surfaces

– Complete rebuild of all teeing grounds and bunkers

– Restoring lost greenside and fairway bunkers

– Fairways expanded 30%

– Complete new HDPE irrigation system

– Major drainage and cartpath re-routing

– $6M (not adjusted to today's dollars) total expense / 2-3 holes closed per phase

HOLE IMPROVEMENTS

An In-house facelift of the Par 3 6th at Siwanoy Country Club was completed. Green was severe back to front overall but was compounded by lowest portion bottom right. If above the hole on upper portion of the green, a well struck putt would often roll past the hole and off the green. The process included:

– Front corner of green was stripped of sod

– Greens rootzone was excavated to the gravel layer

– Greens surround was built up with soil to compliment the higher elevation of green surface

– Gravel layer was built up considerably, +/- 12”

– New rootzone mix was installed, compacted, floated and sodded

– Advised by Architect Mike DeVries with in-house Siwanoy labor

– Late fall work and back into play April 1
